Everyone loves a good clear out from time-to-time. Whether you're moving house or you need to make room for a new addition to the family, hiring a skip bin is an efficient way to discard of masses of rubbish. Before you begin throwing your waste away, there are ways you can maximise the space and save money.

Sort through your garbage in advance

Even if you want to dispose of something, you don't have to throw it in a skip bin straight away. First of all, consider whether you can sell the items on eBay. Not only will you make some money, you'll create more skip space. Alternatively, consider donating items you don't use to friends or local charities.

Break items down into smaller chunks

Whether it's a garden bench or your dining room table, taking some time to break items down into smaller chunks allows you to make more of your space. When you stack unbroken items, you may create air pockets you could otherwise fill with rubbish. In contrast, breaking them down into manageable chunks allows you to stack everything neatly. Although it's all going to a junk yard in the end, taking the neat approach saves you have to hire an oversized skip.

Take some time to pack neatly

Packing neatly takes a little forethought and planning, but it's worth it in the end. Place the larger and flatter items on the bottom or around the sides, then work your way upwards and inwards with other pieces. If possible, crush or shred metal and paper so you can compact it into smaller spaces.

Don't use the skip for items you can recycle

Whether it's glass, cardboard, or plastic, you should check the items you're throwing away before placing them in a skip bin. If your item is recyclable, you can use local government facilities for free to dispose of it. In addition, you should try to keep your skip free from food and other perishable items. Although it acts as an easy means of disposing of large volumes of waste gathering in your home, once they start to decompose they'll attract rats and other pests.

If you're unsure as to how much skip space you need, aim for a slightly bigger model just to make sure. To make your packing efforts extra efficient, plan in advance and dedicate a day or afternoon to make the most of your space. With a little forward planning, you'll reduce the risk of having to hire an additional skip for the rubbish in your home.
