Are you thinking of redoing your lawn? If so, you should consider kikuyu grass as your choice for your new lawn because its characteristics make it work well for most lawns. One of these traits is that this grass requires very little care in order to remain healthy. It grows quickly and repairs faster than other types of grass. Although this is an advantage, you should ensure that you take good care of this grass, and especially in winter. Because kikuyu grass is mostly used in high traffic areas, it is susceptible to losing its lush green color in winter due to stunted growth. The following are ways you can use to maintain healthy growth of this grass on your lawn in winter

Reduce Mowing Height -- Kikuyu grass is one of the fastest growing grass species around. Therefore, while warm weather may mean frequent mowing to maintain the height of your lawn, mowing in winter is meant to ensure that the grass gets enough sunlight. As such, you should raise your mower blades a notch or two higher so that you leave more leaf height. This means greater exposure to limited sunlight and consequently adequate nutrients for the grass. This step is guaranteed to keep the grass on your lawn green in winter.

Fertilize -- While Kikuyu grass will grow well without fertilizer, you should look to fertilize it for a better-looking lawn. In winter, however, you should try as much as possible to avoid fertilizing it. With the ability of the grass to grow rapidly, adding fertilizer will affect sunlight absorption by grass that is late to bloom. Uneven absorption of sunlight leads to uneven coloration on the lawn, which is a sight you do not want on your new lawn.

Water -- During winter, your palmetto grass will need watering, but it should be kept at a minimal level. With the grass remaining wet most of the time in winter, over watering will hurt the roots, which will be detrimental to the health of your lawn. The most important thing to do is ensure that the grass gets optimal water for sustenance, but not too much.

Fight Winter Weeds -- With limited sunlight being available to plants during winter, broad-leaf weeds will tend to become more prominent on your Kikuyu grass lawn. Despite the hardy nature of Kikuyu grass, winter lowers its ability to fight weeds. As such, you should take care of weeds long before they become a menace to your lawn.
